Cambridge ESOL Certificate Courses

Cambridge Young Learners English (YLE) Certificate Courses

We are pleased to announce that the German School will continue offering the aforementioned external University of Cambridge - English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) certificate courses under the umbrella of the Euro Campus in the current school year. The Eurocampus has been an official Cambridge ESOL Examination Centre since 2008. Our centre is privilidged to be staffed with our own highly-experienced course administrators, examination invigilators and Cambridge ESOL-trained Oral Examiners. Most of our examiners are also external examiners for other Cambridge exams in China and other countries.

All our Cambridge courses are taught by native speakers of the English language. The programme runs over one school year during the AG periods and all our courses end with a year-end external Cambridge ESOL Examination held at the EuroCampus. Registered candidates are awarded certificates by Univeristy of Cambridge ESOL upon completion of the external exams. There is a non-refundable course fee which covers prescribed course books, listening materials, administration charges and examination board fees. Please find below an overview of the programme.

Cambridge Young Learners English Course (YLE Starters, Movers, Flyers)

The YLE courses are a child-friendly and fun way for our Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 students to experience the joys of external language testing by Cambridge ESOL. There are no academic entry requirements for the YLE courses. However, our students must be 7 years old on or before 1st April of the current school year in order to be registered for this exam. The 3 levels allow all our students, including newcomers, to participate in and enjoy the programme fully. During the course, our students will learn through exciting field trips, special project work, book studies and interesting IT-based interactive activities. The YLE programme provides a fun-filled learning environment that is different from our regular English lessons. It rewards our youngest learners with one extra English period in the new Ganztagschule concept.

In today's world, learning English is a vital skill that will help your children achieve their full potential in later life. The sooner they start learning, the better — with the right methods, children can learn English quickly, effectively and enjoyably. Once they have this initial grasp of English in primary school, they will have a strong foundation, which will be an advantage in their later studies.

When children learn English, it is important that they learn English, which is practical and useful. It is important that they learn to speak good English and that they work towards international standards that will prepare them for study abroad, or the international world of work.

At Cambridge ESOL we believe that learning should not be stressful for children, it should be fun and stimulating. Their studies should make reading, listening and speaking in English come naturally. As their confidence develops, they will want to learn more and use English to a more challenging level.

An important part of developing that confidence is the support and encouragement you give as a parent — remember, your children need to practise their English as much as possible, including at home.

English for young learners

Children who learn English when they are young will have an advantage that will stay with them all their life. Cambridge ESOL recognises this and has developed a special system of tests designed to get children of primary school age and upwards on the path to learning English.

Young Learners English (YLE) is a reliable and consistent measure of how well your child is doing in the skills of listening, speaking and reading and writing. Tests are designed to make learning fun and children are encouraged by working towards certificates and earning the 'shields' that record their progress.

There are three levels for children to work through, Starters, Movers and Flyers, with Starters being the first, aimed at young children with very basic skills.

Why should your child take Cambridge ESOL qualifications?

Clear progress

Whatever your child's current age, ability, or reason for studying, Cambridge ESOL has an exam, which will be appropriate for him or her to work towards.

They start from certificates aimed at primary school children (YLE) and progress towards qualifications for highly advanced students. You will see that attaining each certificate is a step that leads naturally to taking a more challenging test. Because Cambridge ESOL exams test candidates on what they know rather than what they don't know, learning is encouraged and confidence developed.

Even the most basic certificate is a start on the pathway to qualifications that are useful for work and study.

Kindly take note of the following conditions, which apply upon registration:

    1. The commitment to the course, attendance at lessons and participation in all course activities are binding for one full school year. We therefore ask that you bear this in mind when opting for AGs at the start of each school semester.
    2. Mid-course dropouts or admissions must meet with the approval of the teacher.
    3. Due to escalating costs incurred by the school administration to meet the staffing needs, materials, professional development and logistical support of the programme, the course fee for YLE  is 900 RMB per school year.

Kindly note that the above amount is indicated per course, (i.e. for the whole year) and are heavily subsidised by the school. The fees are non-refundable and include all course materials, Cambridge Examination board fees as well as invigilators’ and oral examiners’ fees.

If your child is interested in any of the external courses we are offering, kindly tick the appropriate boxes on the AG Wahlzettel and submit your application together with the rest of your AG choices. Further course registration procedures will be handled by the course tutors at the start of each course. For further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact the English Department team (see contact above).
